BOARD OF GOVERNORS VISITS AKRO SENIOR HIGH TECHNICAL SCHOOL TO PROMOTE ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE.

The Board of Governors of Akro Senior High Technical School undertook a significant engagement with the school community as part of its commitment to promoting academic excellence, effective teaching and learning, moral discipline and the overall development of the institution. The engagement brought together members of the Board of Governors, school management, teachers and students for an interactive session focused on identifying practical measures to make Akro Senior High Technical School more competitive in terms of academic performance, student discipline, teaching effectiveness and character development. The interaction provided an important platform for the Board to gain a deeper understanding of the experiences and concerns of students and teachers, while also offering guidance on measures required to improve the general standards of the school. The Chairman of the Board of Governors, Nene Tegbadja I, in his address to the students, encouraged them to attach greater importance to their education and to demonstrate a strong commitment to their studies. He urged the students to take advantage of the educational opportunities available to them and to cultivate habits that would enable them to achieve academic success. He emphasised the importance of regular study, discipline, perseverance, respect for authority and a positive attitude towards learning. Nene Tegbadja I further encouraged teachers to approach their teaching responsibilities with patience, understanding and flexibility. He advised teachers to remain calm and responsive in their interactions with students and to adopt teaching approaches that adequately address the varied learning needs and abilities of individual students. He noted that effective teaching requires not only subject-matter knowledge but also an understanding of learners and the ability to create an environment in which students can participate meaningfully in the learning process. The Director of Education for the Lower Manya Krobo Municipality, Mr. Samuel Kwesi Tettey, also addressed the gathering and reinforced the need for discipline and commitment among students. Mr. Tettey urged students to respect and obey their teachers and school authorities, emphasising that discipline is an essential foundation for academic achievement and personal development. He encouraged students to take their studies seriously, make effective use of their instructional time and develop consistent study habits. He further urged them to remain focused on their educational objectives and to understand that academic excellence requires sustained effort, determination and self-discipline. The Director of Education reminded students that teachers play a critical role in guiding them towards their educational and personal goals and, therefore, students must cooperate with their teachers and demonstrate the necessary respect for the teaching profession. The Director-General’s Representative on the Board, Mr. Kofi Biantey, engaged the teaching staff on approaches to addressing disciplinary challenges within the school. He provided teachers with practical strategies for managing student disciplinary issues in a manner that promotes accountability, behavioral improvement and a positive school environment. His presentation emphasized the importance of consistency, fairness, effective communication and appropriate interventions when dealing with student misconduct. Teachers were encouraged to adopt approaches that do not merely punish inappropriate behavior but also seek to understand its causes and guide students towards positive behavioral change. The session further underscored the importance of collaboration between teachers, school management and other relevant stakeholders in maintaining discipline and ensuring that the school remains a safe and conducive environment for teaching and learning. The Headmistress of Akro Senior High Technical School, Ms. Theresa Hushie, expressed her profound appreciation to the Board of Governors for the visit and for its continued interest in the progress and development of the school. In her remarks, the Headmistress outlined a number of challenges currently confronting the institution and which require the attention and support of relevant stakeholders. She noted that addressing these challenges would contribute significantly to improving the school’s operational efficiency, teaching and learning environment, student welfare and overall academic performance. The presentation also provided the Board with an opportunity to appreciate first-hand some of the immediate needs of the institution and to consider possible interventions that could support the school’s development agenda. Open Forum Promotes Constructive Dialogue A significant component of the engagement as the open forum, during which students and teachers were given the opportunity to interact directly with members of the Board. Participants raised a number of issues relating to students’ academic experiences, discipline, teaching and learning, school administration and other matters affecting the effective functioning of the institution. Members of the Board listened attentively to the concerns raised and provided appropriate responses, clarifications and guidance. The forum therefore served as an important avenue for constructive dialogue and strengthened communication between the Board and the school community. The openness of the session demonstrated the Board’s willingness to listen to the concerns of stakeholders and to work collaboratively towards addressing issues affecting the school. The engagement reaffirmed the principle that the sustainable development of Akro Senior High Technical School requires the collective commitment of all stakeholders. Expressions of Appreciation The programme concluded with votes of thanks delivered on behalf of the student body and the teaching staff. The Girls’ Prefect, Dorothy Fafali Agordo, expressed appreciation to the Board on behalf of the students. She thanked the Board members for their time, guidance and willingness to engage directly with the student body. On behalf of the teaching staff, Madam Francisca Nyutsu also expressed appreciation to the Board for its engagement and for the valuable guidance provided, particularly on teaching effectiveness and the management of student disciplinary matters.
